San Juan demolition signals next step in revitalization.
 |
Demolition has begun in parts of the San Juan Homes community, as SAHA continues modernizing its public housing inventory. SAHA was awarded 9% Low income Housing Tax Credits through the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA) for this first phase at San Juan. This exciting new community will also utilize Replacement Housing Funds (RHF) to create new public housing apartments.
The new community, to be known as San Juan Square, will be the result of a public-private partnership with the NRP Group LLC.
In Phase I, 88 existing Public Housing units will be replaced with 143 mixed-income units. Of the total 143 units, six will serve market rate residents and have no income restrictions, with the remaining 137 maintained as tax credit units. Forty-six of the 137 tax credit units will be reserved for public housing residents, with the remaining 91 units serving households with incomes at or below 60% of the Area Median Income (AMI).
San Juan Square will include a modern clubhouse, swimming pool, health club, laundry and computer room. An after-school program will also be provided for residents. Phase I is the first step in transforming this site into a vibrant, modern, viable, close-to-downtown, diverse, mixed-income community.
