Who lives in SAHA's Public Housing?

SAHA’s public housing client base is a large and diverse group of people in terms of age, ethnicity/race, classification and source of income.  As of July 2006, SAHA owns more than 60 public housing communities throughout the city, with more than 6,400 housing units.  Our data indicates that 51% of our residents are families, 21% are designated as elderly, and the remaining 28% are disabled or elderly/disabled.

As for reported income, only 2% of SAHA’s public housing residents report no source of income.  Almost half of public housing residents receive income from social security, and 24% report receiving wages from some form of employment.

Our public housing
program is comprise of 78% Hispanic families, while 13% are African American and 8% are white.

And, contrary to popular belief, most families in the public housing program participate for only a short period of time. The majority (55%) of public housing residents are on housing assistance for two years or less. A total of
82% utilize the housing assistance for 6 years or less, with only about 11% remaining on the program for more than 10 years, and those are mostly seniors and disabled residents on fixed incomes.
