Housing Modernization Test met with great reviews

SAHA’s modernization plan calls for updating three communities with unit renovations.  Designed to create a modern apartment in one of SAHA’s oldest communities, SAHA recently renovated a unit at Cassiano homes.  As SAHA continues to explore options under its “Big 6+1” program to revitalize communities nearing obsolescence and infrastructure failure, these types of renovations are being tested to determine if such renovations are practical throughout SAHA’s aging communities.

Met with very positive reception, the agency is pressing ahead with plans for another test unit.  Although SAHA would like to create more modern units at Cassiano, Lincoln Courts and Alazan-Apache Courts, financing shortfalls could hamper this renovation effort.

SAHA needs to renovate at least 1,350 units at the three properties.  With renovation costs for each unit at about $15,000, the agency is working to set aside funding to support the renovations; however, increasing costs and other high priority projects could restrict possible future renovations. Also, the infrastructures at the three communities are aging, and the agency is concerned future problems could prohibit continued renovation.  That said, SAHA’s recent board approval for these renovations gives the agency the support necessary to move forward with pursuing this initiative.
