SAHA’s first core value always do the right thing seems simple. It’s a basic rule we’re taught when we’re young. It’s so simple, you might wonder why we made it one of our core values.
Because doing the right thing isn’t always easy. Sometimes we take shortcuts, or lose patience. We disregard or ignore. We run out of time, money or material. And sometimes, we forget who we are and what we’re about.
Doing the right thing means making a mature decision when we’re faced with a situation that presents different and often difficult options. Doing the right thing means putting the needs of our clients and the organization above our personal needs, wants or desires.
Nearly every day, we see examples in the news of companies and organizations that run into catastrophe because someone didn’t do the right thing. The motives differ, but the results are the same: The organization loses credibility, employees lose faith and the organization’s mission suffers.
The San Antonio Housing Authority has a very clear mission: Provide decent, safe and affordable housing for our community’s low-income families, and help them find the path to financial independence. We’ve worked hard to ensure the agency is credible, faithful and dedicated to its charter.
We have created a lot of goals for SAHA. There is only one way to guarantee we meet those goals: Each one of us must strive to always do the right thing.
