VILLALOBOS WINS GOLDEN SPUR

Texas Public Relations Association Awards Banquet
SAHA cosponsored this year’s TPRA conference at the historic St. Anthony Hotel February 29- March 2, 2008.  Gavino Ramos, Director of Corporate Relations, along with his “posse” Lilia Swayne, Monica Quiroga, Elvira Martinez, Caren Cuellar, and Dolores Muller, took home two awards for both Insight and the SAHA website.  More impressively, SAHA Chief of Staff Melanie Villalobos was awarded the highest honor of the night, the “Golden Spur”.

The Golden Spur is TPRA's highest recognition for member service. The recipient must make significant and long-lasting contributions to TPRA and to the public relations profession during at least 10 years of membership. The award is presented only in years when outstanding candidates are nominated and approved by the TPRA Board of Directors.  Melanie has certainly worked hard for SAHA and the TPRA, and we wish to congratulate her on this tremendous accomplishment!

= FOOD PORTIONS
Food portions quiz

If you think popcorn tastes better now than when you were younger, it’s true – only today it has three times as many calories, too. Coffee with milk has more than doubled in calories now that it’s mocha coffee. And today’s chocolate chip cookies are wider and have many more calories than grandma’s over-baked version.
It’s no wonder our bodies have expanded over the past few decades. So have our food portions. It has been a subtle, but dangerous, increase in our calorie consumption.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) developed a quiz on how food portions have grown in the past 20 years. The quiz checks our knowledge of calories, and then tells us how much physical activity is necessary to burn those extra calories. See if you can guess correctly.
Choose the option you think is correct
1.Muffin: 20 years ago muffins had ____ calories, as compared to today’s ___ calories, and it takes this much time vacuuming to burn those extra calories _____.
a. 210 calories / 500 calories / 90 minutes of vacuuming
b. 100 calories / 350 calories / 50 minutes of vacuuming
2. Pepperoni Pizza: 20 years ago a slice had ___ calories, as compared to today’s ___ calories, and it takes this much time playing golf, walking and carrying your own
clubs, to burn those extra calories _____.
a. 350 calories / 500 calories / 30 minutes of golf
b. 500 calories / 850 calories / 60 minutes of golf
3. Bagel: 20 years ago a bagel had a 3-inch diameter and ___ calories, as compared to today’s 6-inch diameter and ___ calories, and it takes this much time raking leaves in order to burn the extra calories _____.
a. 140 calories / 350 calories / 50 minutes of raking leaves
b. 50 calories / 200 calories / 25 minutes of raking leaves
4. Cheeseburger: 20 years ago a cheeseburger had ___ calories, as compared to today’s cheeseburger with ___ calories, and you’ll need to spend this much time lifting
weights to burn the extra calories _____.
a. 330 calories / 590 calories / 90 minutes of lifting weights
b. 440 calories / 660 calories / 180 minutes of lifting weights
5. Soda: 20 years ago a soda was 6.5 oz. and had ___ calories, as compared to today’s 20 oz. soda with ___ calories. You would have to work in the garden for ____ to burn those extra calories.
a. 115 calories / 350 calories / 55 minutes
b. 85 calories / 250 calories / 35 minutes
Food portions quiz answers:
1. a.
20 years ago, a 1.5 oz. muffin had 210 calories, and today’s muffin is 4 oz. and has 500 calories. It will take approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes of vacuuming to burn the extra 290 calories.
2. b.
20 years ago, a slice of pepperoni pizza was 500 calories; today it’s 850 calories, and you would have to play golf for one hour to burn the extra 350 calories.
3. a.
20 years ago, a bagel was smaller (3-inch diameter) and had 140 calories, as compared to today’s 6-inch bagel with 350 calories. It would take 50 minutes of raking leaves to burn off the extra 210 calories.
4. a.
20 years ago, a cheeseburger had 330 calories; today it’s 590 calories. You would have to lift weights for 1 hour and 30 minutes to burn the extra 260 calories.
5. b.
